Equipment Needed

The Geology Department will provide Brunton compasses, and base maps. The following is a list of general equipment that you must provide for yourself. Some of the items may be shared.


FIELD GEAR – required for your safety, comfort, and the academic program.

Geology hammer (a small machinist’s hammer is fine if you want to save money)

Hand lens (10X is preferred; B&L Hastings triplet is best quality)

Watch (required!)

Day field pack (belt, shoulder, or back pack)

2 bound field notebooks (or a minimum of 4 of the small, paperback ones)

Clipboard or Plexiglas mapboard (recommended)

Various clamps, rubber bands, and tape (to fasten maps to clipboard)

Water bottles are not required; plenty of water in bottles is provided

Small, crush-proof container for your field lunches and garbage Tupperware

Small pocket knife

Very small first-aid kit for scratches, bug bites, and blisters (band-aids, antiseptic)


Field boots suitable for 6 weeks of rough, off-trail use

Rain gear (a simple poncho will suffice)

A pair of sturdy field pants (Should be loose enough to not restrict movement, but strong enough to handle thick brush)

Other field clothing and equipment (shirts, windbreaker, warmer jacket, field hat, sun screen, boot socks, sunglasses)

Geology in the Field by Robert R. Compton, 1985, (highly recommended)

Acid bottle filled with HCl (highly recommended)


DRAFTING AND OFFICE SUPPLIES

Straight edge, protractor, and
c-thru ruler mm scale (see site below:

Colored pencil set (12 will do) -- no felt tips

Drawing pencils or mechanical pencils with several harnesses of lead

White out


Rapidograph-type pen for fine inking of maps and air photos (suggest 1, 0, and 00 tips) plus high-quality black india ink. If you can afford only one rapidograph point, get the 0 size. A rapidograph pen with a 0 tip will cost you about $25. Another type of pen may be substituted: Pigma Micron pens with archival quality ink come in various pen point sizes.


Note: felt-tip pens cannot be used in place of rapidograph-type pens.


MISCELLANEOUS AND PERSONAL SUPPLIES

Camera (optional)

Spare set of prescription glasses

Cell phone: most US phone do not function in Europe. If you need a cell phone, disposable ones are available in Italy.

ATM card, credit card, debit card. DO NOT TAKE traveler’s checks; these are easily forged and are difficult to cash except in banks. ATMs are widely available throughout Europe.

Light sleeping bag – to used in hostel and in the cabins during our stay in the Gennargentu
Mountains (5-8 June; see Schedule)

Bathroom supplies, towel, flip-flops, soap and other personal items
