Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Utah

I am currently working in an ongoing investigation of the dynamics of this dune

field in far southern Utah.  My co-investigator in this endeavor is Dr. Rick Ford

at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah.  Together, we are investigating:

• rates of dune migration (aerial photography, GIS, dendrochronology)
• factors influencing dune mobility
• sedimentary structure of dune types
• morphostratigraphic boundaries between dune types

This investigation has utilized ground-penetrating radar to image the internal

structure of the dunes and to identify location of the underlying bedrock.  We are

also using tree-rings collected from ponderosa pine within the dune field to see

if they can provide signals of past dune mobility.
