Petrology, Geochemistry, and Volcanology

Associated Faculty:

Craig White, Mark Schmitz

Overview:

The great variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest provide ample opportunities for research in petrology. Graduate thesis projects typically combine field based research with modern geochemical modeling techniques. Current thesis projects are focused on the geochemistry and volcanology of Quaternary basalts in the western Snake River Plain, the petrology of Tertiary volcanics in the Oregon Cascade Range, and the structure and petrology of Mesozoic accreted arc terranes.

Projects:

Geochemistry of basalts in the Western Snake River Plain, Idaho

Paleozoic/Mesozoic subduction zone and arc-axis metamorphism in accreted terranes of Idaho, Oregon and Washington

Volcanology of maars and tuff cones in the Western Snake River Plain hydrovolcanic province

Petrology, structure and stratigraphy of the Western Cascade Range in Oregon

Contact metamorphism adjacent to the Idaho Batholith

Petrology of differentiated mafic intrusions
